Costa Blanca Golf Paradise
10 Mar 2021

The Costa Blanca is a versatile region. Lovely weather, beautiful beaches, amusement parks, nice cities and more. When it comes to golf, this coast does not disappoint either. There are more than 30 courses all over the Costa Blanca. Many golf courses are south of Elche. But, in this blog we will restrict ourselves to a selection of golf courses within an hour's drive of Moraira.

The Costa Blanca is a paradise for golfers. The average annual temperature is 20 degrees. So, ideal circumstances to play golf. On top, the high season of golf coincides with the mild Costa Blanca winters. There are many golf courses and a large variety of good golf resorts.

History of Golf in Spain

The history of Spanish Golf did not start in our region. In 1891 the estate “Lomo del Polvo” developed into the first Spanish golf course. Later referred to as Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas".

In 1954 the Air Force founded the “Real Club de Golf Manises” in Valencia. It was the 16th Golf Course founded in Spain.

In 1972 Alicante Province welcomed its first golf course, Villamartin Golf Club.

Association of Golf Courses of the Costa Blanca

This organization was founded in 1992 by the first golf clubs in the Costa Blanca. Over the years more clubs joined. As well as tourist companies and hotels. This non-profit Association is now one of the most important ones in Spain and Europe. They work with the leaders in the tourist industry that specialize in golf tourism.

As said before, we will limit ourselves in this blog to golf courses that are less than 1-hour drive from Moraira. To be more specific: from Oliva to Alicante. So, let´s start!

Alicante Golf – Playa de San Juan

Alicante Golf is only 5 minutes away from the centre of Alicante city and next to the beach of San Juan. It opened in January 1998. In 2001 it housed the Levante Cup. A professional competition in the Comunidad de Valencia. Severiano Ballesteros designed the court. Alicante Golf is one of the best maintained and designed golf courses in Spain. Lakes, trees and bushes ensure that there is a rich flora and fauna, with an emphasis on local fauna. Designed to be entertaining, attractive and challenging for all levels. They recommend using a buggy as distances are quite big. Alicante Golf has 18 holes. Facing hole 18 there is Hotel Alicante Golf. Alicante Golf is a true oasis in the hustle and bustle of a gentle city.

Club de Golf las Rejas – Benidorm

Golf Club Las Rejas is one of the two golf courses in Benidorm. Situated near the Poniente beach and integrated with its environment. This 9-hole course serves both new and experienced players. Difficulty is medium. Designed by Ramon Espinosa and founded in 2008. A short course that attracts many golf players.

Villaitana Golf Resort - Benidorm

Villaitana is more than golf. Two golf courses set in a picturesque Mediterranean village. All run by the famous Melia Group. Two 4- and 5-star hotels, restaurants, sport facilities and swimming pools. This is something different and considered to be the most spectacular in this area. There are 2 golf courses here. Both 18-holes and designed by Nicklaus Design. With views of the Benidorm bay and integrated in the natural surroundings. The Levante Course is a US-style long course. The Poniente course is the shorter alternative. Better for beginners in the world of golf playing. But more trained players will have a good time here as well

Don Cayo - Altea

In the lovely area of Altea la Vella we find another great golf course named Don Cayo. It is the oldest golf course on the Costa Blanca. Wholly owned by its members. Though visitors are welcome to play. With the Sierra de Bernia mountain at the back and the sea in front this golf course offers stunning views. Don Cayo has 9 holes, but it is possible to play it as 18 holes. A course suitable for all levels. It is a bit hilly, but not too much. It exists since 1974. In 2006 the course upgraded. The lovely restaurant Jacaranda is a good place to relax and enjoy the magnificent views.

Golf Ifach – Benissa

Ifach Golf Club is the closest golf course to Moraira, situated in San Jaime. This club is one of the older clubs in the Alicante region. Designed in the 70s by Javier AranaThe views make it a pleasant course to play. Sea views and views of the Peñon de Ifach. Very tranquil. From the Club House (bar and restaurant) you can enjoy the wonderful views. There are also tennis courts, a pool and a playground. Many holes have large greens protected by bunkers. The sea breeze is a plus on a sunny day. The course is relatively easy. Some players need more challenge, but the setting is gorgeous. Golf Ifach is good for a pleasant and relaxed golf game.

Club de Golf Javea

This 9-hole coursis close to the impressive Montgo mountain. Very well-maintained greens flanked by different types of trees. Francisco Moreno designed the course which opened its doors in 1981. It is not the most difficult course to play but it guarantees a pleasant play in a beautiful setting.

Club de Golf La Sella – Denia

La Sella Golf is in Jesus Pobre, but most will say it is in Denia. The well-known golf player Jose Maria Olazabal designed the course. It started with 18 holes in 1991. In 2010 the course extended with another 9 holes course. So, in total there are 27 holes, divided into 3 smaller courses. All named after the local winds. The first round has the name “Llebeig” a warm Sahara wind. A very nice course with pretty views and a lot of challenge. The golf player will have to use 90%+ of his clubs. ¨"Gregal" is the second 9 holes challenge. The name refers to the wind that ships used to go to Greece. The youngest 9-hole course "Mestral" refers to the cold wind that farmers fear. La Sella Golf hosted very international golf events. There is a high-level Marriott Hotel and Restaurant Hoyo 19 offers local dishes.

Oliva Nova Golf – Oliva

An 18 holes golf course with many water obstacles and very close to the beach. Severiano Ballesteros designed Oliva Nova Golf in 1995. Large, not too fast greens that suit players of all levels. It has short, medium and long holes. And 10 artificial lakes. The course is long, but flat. An easy walk for every golf player. There is an excellent hotel. How easy to combine hobby with a pleasant stay at the beach.

Help! It is raining

Although rain is confetti from the sky, we understand you do not want to play on a rainy day. There is a great alternative in Benissa: Maxi Golf Benissa. Here you practice your swing with a simulator. On top they offer classes, indoor putting area practice and much more.

Golf and real estate

Golf courts are attractive. So there a villas and apartment complexes near the different courses. Like this excellent villa in Altea la Vella or these beautiful apartments in La Sella.

The team of Orange Villas is stand-by to help you find the perfect golf property in the Costa Blanca North. We hope you will have a lovely time on the green!
