5 typical Spanish drinks

We probably don't have to tell you that Spain is a real wine country, but there are many more tasty drinks to order in sunny Spain. Because nothing is as delicious as a refreshing drink after a long day at the beach, right? We list 5 typical Spanish drinks (with alcohol) for you! 

1. Tinto de Verano

This drink is perfect for red wine lovers who also like refreshment. Tinto de Verano actually means "red wine of the summer" and consists of a combination of red wine, Sprite and ice, sometimes with a dash of rum. Those who want to watch the calories can also ask for ‘Casera’ (Spanish version of Sweet soda)  Instead of Sprite. Although you can pour Tinto de Verano from a bottle, it is naturally better when the bartender prepares it with love. So always ask for the fresh-made variant!

2. Sangría

We probably don't need to explain this. The original version consists of red wine, Fanta or mineral water, pieces of fruit such as apple or peach, orange, lemon and sugar. The red wine can be replaced by sparkling Cava, giving you a blank version. Sometimes liqueur or brandy is also used. Besides the delicious taste, Sangría is also nicely served in a glass carafe with a wooden spoon that can be used to fish pieces of fruit from the bottom that are filled with alcohol. Ideal for sharing with friends on a terrace. 

3. Mistela

This sweet liqueur wine is mainly produced and drunk in the provinces around Alicante. The popular drink originally only consists of grapes and alcohol. So much alcohol is added to the grapes that the juice does not ferment. There are now countless flavor variations, from honey to cloves and orange peels. A delicious sweet drinker for after your dinner!

4. Clara

Many Spaniards order a clara when sitting on a terrace. This drink consists of beer and Fanta: nice and refreshing! Do you prefer an original beer? Then order a caña. This is a small draft beer that is usually preferred to the larger size because of the heat. 

5. Local specialties

Almost every Spanish region has its own local drink. You will find the typical Agua de Valencia around Valencia. This delicious drink consists of cava, orange juice, gin, vodka and sugar. A dangerous combination, because the fresh, sweet taste makes it so drinkable. Are you in the south of Spain? Then drink a sherry. This is originally Jerez de la Frontera and is therefore called "Jerez". The word "sherry" does not appear in the Spanish dictionary.
