Christmas decor trends 2020

Christmas decor trends 2020
8 Dec 2020

We all agree if we say that 2020 has been a tough and different year. Normal life changed by the Corona virus. Everyone felt something of the consequences of Covid 19. So it is not strange that we want to give extra attention to the atmosphere this coming Christmas period. Many of us will use the ornaments and Christmas tree decorations that we already have. But if you want to be trendy this year you better read further and learn everything about the new Xmas trends.

We spotted three main trends. Experts says that the trend colors for this year will last until next year. What are the three Christmas decor trends 2020?

Trend 1 – Back to Nature

Natural is "hot" in interior decorating and so for Christmas decoration. Last year we knew this style was as “cool natural” with recycled and natural materials. Elements like fir green, sisal, mushrooms and jute dominate this style. The colours that you see in the “Back to Nature” trend are brown. From pine brown to cone brown (from grey-brown to honey brown). Furthermore, there is natural white and different shades of green. Fir green and eucalyptus green are the most popular greens. Think of Christmas decoration items made from wood, paper, felt and straw.

Within the "Back to Nature" trend we distinguish three sub-trends:

  • Vintage
  • Natural
  • Modern-puristic

VINTAGE

Colours like iron black and antique silver are the metal colours in this look. As well as retro colours like mint green and rosé. Use soft fabrics in natural colours or a medium grey. Ornaments and Christmas tree decorations should be natural and traditional. Or course with a vintage finish. Examples are nostalgic furniture, angels, Santa Clauses and rocking horses.

NATURAL

This is the purest “Back to Nature” style of all three. The colours to use in this trend are brown, fir green, red and natural white. Avoid metallic decoration items and use electrical elements as less as possible. Consider replacing the Christmas balls for real apples. Use real candles (but be careful). Other hangings that fit in this style are wooden figures like angels, straw stars and nuts. If you prefer to have glass balls in the tree better stick to the colours mentioned above. Use as many natural and eco-friendly materials as possible. If you don´t want to miss the metal effects think of gold and silver. Combine silver with cool brown tones. Combine gold and old gold with honey brown. It is important to give the impression that accessories are handmade and sustainable.

MODERN-PURISTIC

The modern-puristic style uses the natural basic colours. Besides these terracotta and curry shades, lime green and traditional red are popular. Bring contrast with colours like dark grey and black. Use berries, eucalyptus and metal rings. Characteristic for this style is the simple design. Combined with shiny modern elements. What is very important for this style is that “less is more”. Forget about abundancy.

Trend 2 – American Sweet Lush

This style existed already last year and continues to be popular in 2020. The American influences are everywhere. This is a very easy trend to follow as the main idea is: Do what you like as long as it is a lot!

If you want to decorate your tree with this style make sure that when finished there is hardly any green to see. It is common to choose a colour combination that you use for accessories. Think of garlands and table runners. The rest can be multi colour. A so-called colour concept can be for example green-red-white.

If you follow this trend the tree should be full of balls, ribbons, candy canes and garlands. Christmas tree decorations are not limited to round balls. Hang figures like stars and angels. Less traditional is the new food related trend. Cucumbers, donuts, cokes cans etc. Another new sub-trend is relating to flora and fauna. Hang tigers, elephants, fish and mushrooms in the tree.

American Sweet Lush means decorating in- and outside. Stockings on the fireplace, a wreath on the front door and lights, lights and lights.

Trend 3 – Decadence Christmas Deco

This trend is about glamour and abundancy. Influenced by Art Deco and the roaring 20s. The Decadence trend is for those who want opulent and abundant luxurious decorations. Most important colours are black, chrome black and gold. But also, deep-blue, deep purple emerald and silver. Use gold tones if you want to create a warm atmosphere. Cool colours combine better with silver. Use a lot of ornaments and decoration but be careful not to exaggerate. Then, it can turn into a vintage style.

Upcoming years

Nobody has a glass ball. Though experts say that the upcoming trends for 2021-2022 are orange-grey-white and gold-curry-orange-black. This year the maritime trend started at the background but will be hot in the next two years.

Where to buy

Expats from northern Europe might find it strange to celebrate Christmas in Spain. Mild temperatures and even sun. And no immense offer of Christmas decoration items as you know. But, it has improved a lot over the last 10 years. It is not necessary to stick to the artificial tree. Garden centres sell real Christmas trees in different sizes. Don´t wait too long to buy a tree as there is limited stock.

Looking for some lovely decoration and ornaments? Have a look of the wide selection of CASA (in Ondara and Calpe) or Maison du Monde (Benidorm). For sure you will find lovely accessories for a perfect Christmas table in Zara Home in Benidorm and Ondara. Leroy Merlin (Ondara and Benidorm) has nice and not too expensive decorations. And of course, you can look at online shops. Like Westwing where you definitely will find what you are looking for.

Trends are great to follow. But the most important thing is that you and your family feel good about the decoration and the colours. Follow your gut feeling and create your own trend.

The team of Orange Villas wishes you a marvellous and healthy Christmas!
