Description
Costa Blanca is the tourist name given to the Mediterranean coast in the southeast of Spain. It means “white coast”. There are many stories where the name derives from. Some say the name refers to the almond blossom which flowers in February. In 1957 the airline company British European Airways invented the name for commercial purposes. It referred to the white beaches that are visible from the air.
The Costa Blanca region starts in Denia and ends in Pilar de la Horadada in the province of Alicante (Spain). Made up of 244 km of Mediterranean beaches, coves and cliffs. The towns located in north Costa Blanca are: Denia, Jávea, El Poble Nou de Benitatxell, Teulada-Moraira and Benissa. Followed by Calpe, Altea, Alfaz del Pi, Benidorm and Finestrat. South from Benidorm there are: Villajoyosa, Campello, Alicante, Elche and Santa Pola. In the South are Guardamar del Segura, Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa and Pilar de la Horadada.
It has a mild climate and the average temperature is around 18 degrees. The World Health Organization declared it one of the best climates in the world. This attracts many tourists and expats who decide to live here on a (semi) permanent basis.
Tourism is the economic motor of the region. It is difficult to imagine that the modern beach resorts were cute fishing villages in the old days. Some villages tried to keep the old charm by putting building restrictions in place. Others, like Benidorm, developed high speed.
Nature is attractive in the Costa Blanca. Mountain ranges (ideal for hiking) on one side, and the blue Mediterranean Sea and white beaches on the other side. The more south you go, the drier it gets.

ALICANTE CITY
Most people that visit the Costa Blanca will land on the airport of Alicante. If you have not visited Alicante it is worth to stay 1 or 2 days to discover this Mediterranean city.
The symbol of Alicante is the Explanada, a promenade made with 6,5 million green, blue and red tiles. There is a charming old centre where strolling through the streets is a must. The Castle of Santa Barbara watches over the city. From this fortress the sea views are great. Alicante has some interesting historical buildings and old churches worth visiting. A prominent building is the Carbonell House on the Explanada.
Alicante has lovely beaches, where locals and tourists love to spend their day. Opposite of Alicante lays the uninhabited island of Tabarca.
Alicante hosts various events. One of them is the Volvo Ocean Race. Every 3 years this famous race starts in the port of Alicante.
